The ability of people to access the waterfall was hampered by the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Kaikoura in 2016. At the time, rock debris blocked the main roads leading here, and the risk of rockfall over small trails prompted authorities to close the area to tourists. The animals, however, have benefited.
Species born after the seismic event, called the ‘earthquake generation’, are successfully developing and thriving.
